Our history

CEL was established in 1996 as the Centre for Educational Leadership. It has since become one of the largest and most successful centres of its kind in the UK, designing and delivering leadership programmes and qualifications across the public, private and charitable sectors.

Initially, a large proportion of our work was designing and delivering leadership development programmes on behalf of the National College for School Leadership. Consequently, over the last 15 years:

  • over 50,000 people have chosen to improve their performance by completing one of our leadership development programmes
  • more than 3,000 middle and senior leaders have completed our Coaching Programme
  • over 700 senior professionals have completed our Postgraduate Certificate and Masters in Process Consultancy. This is one of the fastest growing professional qualifications within the University

International work

Our international work has included providing leadership development for Charles University in Prague, the Czech Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, the Lithuanian Ministry of Education and Science, and the Kenyan Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST). In some of these projects, we worked with BBC Worldwide Interactive Learning, the British Council and the Department for International Development (DfID).

Our expertise and experience

The core CEL and Egan models have been used over the last 20 years across a wide range of organisations and settings. While CEL's focus has been mainly on educational leadership, our programmes and interventions have attracted participants and organisations from a range of backgrounds. It is a natural progression for us to work in other sectors where our approach is relevant.

CEL's core leadership team now includes staff with senior management experience in education, social care, public services, local government, SMEs and retail, and is expanding its expertise to meet requests from other public, private and charitable organisations.
