National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH)
The National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) is the first choice qualification for anyone aspiring to be a headteacher or principal.
Designed in collaboration with some of the country’s leading headteachers and academics, NPQH has new features designed to develop the most outstanding generation of school and academy leaders to date.
Who is it for?

NPQH is open to:
- anyone who is thinking of headship in the next 12–18 months
- anyone who has the full support of their headteacher or line manager
What do I get?
The redesigned NPQH follows a modular curriculum based on masters level criteria and focuses on developing the knowledge, skills and attributes of a successful headteacher.
New features of NPQH include:
- three essential and two elective modules focusing on key aspects of headship
- a placement of a minimum of nine days at another school
- access to peer learning and optional coaching to extend and maximise learning throughout the whole programme
Dates and costs
There will only be one application round per year. The application round is open until 1pm on 15 May 2012.
The National College will subsidise the cost of the application process and final assessment of NPQH.
How do I apply?
We are running Application Workshops to help you fully understand how you can meet the requirements of the application process. These will take place on the following dates:

- CREA, Kendal - 3 May 2012
- CEL Manchester - 8 May 2012
- Harrogate Grammar School - 8 May 2012
- Blackpool City Learning Centre – 9 May 2012
- Methley Primary School, Leeds - 9 May 2012
- Durham Leadership Centre - 10 May 2012
- CEL Manchester - 18 June 2012
All workshops will run from 4.00-5:30pm.
